On June 18, at the "Green City, Smart City – Geely Green Energy & Intelligent Mobility Technology Ecosystem Launch Event" held at AsiaWorld-Expo Hong Kong, Geely Farizon New Energy Commercial Vehicle Group(Geely Farizon) and The Hong Kong & China Gas Company Limited(The Hong Kong & China Gas) formally sealed a strategic cooperation deal. Focusing on core areas including methanol fuel supply, refueling infrastructure construction and the promotion of methanol-powered commercial vehicles, the two parties will explore integrated green energy and transport development pathways tailored to Hong Kong’s local demands.

当前，香港正以《香港气候行动蓝图2050》为指引，加快绿色交通与能源转型步伐。然而，香港土地资源紧缺、充电设施建设难度大，纯电动路线在实际推广中面临客观制约，亟需一套因地制宜的绿色能源解决方案。甲醇被誉为“液态的氢、液体的电”，可通过二氧化碳加氢大规模制备，是全球公认的“e-fuel”电制燃料。并且作为液态新能源，甲醇具有储运便捷、加注高效等特点，可以利用现有基础设施进行低成本改造，高度契合香港实际需求。

Guided by Hong Kong’s Climate Action Blueprint 2050, the city is accelerating its shift to green transport and renewable energy. Nevertheless, land scarcity and barriers to charging infrastructure construction impose tangible limits on the rollout of battery-electric vehicles, creating an urgent need for localized green energy solutions. Hailed as "liquid hydrogen and liquid electricity", methanol can be mass-produced via carbon dioxide hydrogenation and is widely recognized as a sustainable e-fuel worldwide. As a liquid new energy source, methanol boasts easy storage, transportation and fast refueling. Existing facilities can be retrofitted at low cost, making it highly compatible with Hong Kong’s unique conditions.

Founded in 1862, The Hong Kong & China Gas is Hong Kong’s earliest public utility and the sole city-wide piped gas operator, owning Hong Kong’s only comprehensive municipal gas pipeline network to underpin methanol energy development. Drawing on Geely Holding Group’s over 20 years of methanol technology expertise, Geely Farizon has built a full methanol industrial chain covering green methanol production, refueling network deployment, methanol powertrain R&D and mass vehicle commercialization.

Combining Geely Farizon’s proven methanol ecosystem operation experience with The Hong Kong & China Gas’s local energy network strengths, the two sides can build a full closed loop covering methanol supply, refueling infrastructure and vehicle adoption rapidly at low cost. Moving forward, they will leverage complementary strengths in product technology, market promotion, local operation and energy supply chains to jointly plan and build Hong Kong’s M100 vehicle methanol supply system. They will also explore site planning and commercial operation models for methanol refueling stations to unlock diverse applications of methanol energy.

To better support Hong Kong’s green transport transition, Geely Farizon has built a comprehensive industrial ecosystem in Hong Kong spanning vehicle deployment, methanol refueling and industry-academia collaboration in recent years. At the core of methanol adoption lies methanol-electric range-extender technology. It generates power via methanol combustion to eliminate range and refueling pain points of traditional new energy vehicles, representing an ideal and upgraded electrification solution. The Farizon U12M methanol REV bus, tailor-made for Hong Kong with methanol-electric technology, recently obtained an emissions exemption from the Environmental Protection Department and is poised for full commercial launch.

Compared with diesel-powered vehicles, methanol-electric models cut particulate matter emissions by 98%, carbon monoxide by 88% and nitrogen oxides by 82%, while slashing overall energy costs by 32% to 52%, delivering outstanding environmental and economic benefits. To date, more than 60,000 Geely methanol REV vehicles have entered service, covering a combined mileage of over 25 billion kilometers, fully verifying the technology’s maturity and reliability. Moving ahead, Geely Farizon will accelerate the rollout of methanol REV light trucks, vans and heavy trucks in Hong Kong to deliver robust support for the city’s green transport shift.
